Trainer Profile - Dudley Nicholls
Dudley Nicholls, BSocSc ACA is a financial markets and risk management specialist. Having originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant he has held senior positions within the banking industry (JP Morgan, Nippon Credit, ANZ and ABN AMRO), in trading, market risk management, liquidity management and as the senior manager of a bank’s global macro internal hedge fund.
As the senior manager of the ABN AMRO fund, he oversaw traders managing equivalent to €500 million of capital using up to 8 times leverage, trading covered global interest rates, Foreign Exchange, commodities and equity derivatives. The fund was consistently profitable and used a wide variety of trading strategies in different markets with different liquidity characteristics. As well as overall strategy he was responsible for managing all the risks (Market, Credit, Liquidity, Operational and Reputation) and ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
Within his career he gained significant experience of global markets having had responsibility at varying times for managing different risks of different products and different locations in all regions as global Head of Treasury Risk at ABN AMRO for the Middle East, South America, Europe, USA and South East Asia. This also included being the special risk advisor to a Saudi Arabian bank. Previous and subsequent experience included managing interest rate derivative risk and emerging market risk. Dudley Nicholls has experience of developing and refining multi asset market risk models including scenario analysis. He has been a member of various senior committees within ABN AMRO, including London ALCO, Group Liquidity committee, various sub risk committees and the Group Risk Committee.
Whilst, Dudley Nicholls managed and worked with proprietary traders, he also developed an understanding of trader psychology and how this impacts risk taking decisions. He has made presentations to senior management and internal audit on this subject including where and why spectacular losses were made.
A regular lecturer at the ABN AMRO risk academy, Dudley Nicholls now lectures on financial markets, financial products and risk management, with subject matter expertise in interest rates, FX, commodities, risk management and liquidity risk. As well as the theoretical aspects he looks to highlight and talk about practical realities drawing on his experience and real life examples.
